Brooklyn Brewmaster's Manhattan Project keg unearthed! The only known keg in NYC!

Tired of precious cocktail lounges? Then sip your Manhattan at a pub. Brooklyn Brewery’s latest reserve beer, Manhattan Project, replicates the hallmark flavors of what is arguably the most classic of drinks, the Manhattan. Brooklyn brewmaster Garrett Oliver orchestrated the crafty mimicry with input from mix master David Wondrich. “He introduced me to the Manhattan,” Oliver says. “It became my favorite mixed drink.” To replicate the taste, he used 30-percent rye in the beer mash and aged it in Rittenhouse rye barrels. Botanicals conjure the nuances of vermouth and bitters—cinnamon, nutmeg, bitter orange peel, sweet orange peel, lemon peel, organic cherry juice and vanilla bean in the kettle, plus post-fermentation infusions of gentian root and cloves. The first sip reveals bourbon’s smooth personality, alongside a spicy rye bite. A rich sweetness lingers, but—like a well-executed Manhattan—it’s never cloying. And at 8.5% ABV, it packs plenty of umph, just like the real thing. Manhattan Project is a limited release. - TONY

THE GATE CELEBRATES LIFE & LIMB

In August of 2009, brewing pioneer Ken Grossman of Sierra Nevada and maverick brewer Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head collaborated on a companionship. The result is a brotherhood of beer reflecting the kinship that has developed between these two indefatigable craft beer brewer-advocates.

Life & Limb is a 10% ABV strong beer that defies style characteristics-brewed with pure maple syrup from the Calagione family farm in Massachusetts and estate barley grown on the Grossman “farm” at the brewery in Chico. The beer is alive with yeast-a blend of both breweries’ house strains-bottle conditioned for added complexity and shelf life, and naturally carbonated with birch syrup fresh from Alaska; it is the first beer we know of ever to use birch syrup in the brew.

Limb & Life is a companion to the big beer-an acorn off the larger tree. It is a 5% ABV small beer-a low-gravity beer made using the residual sugar as “second runnings” from the first larger brew, fortified with American hops. This is a session beer. Its big brother is a sipper.

In tribute to this pair of collaborative brews, we will also roll out a few selected specialties from both Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head.

NYC Beer Week. We have decided to opt out of the 'official' beer week thing and will do what we always do 52.

We are gearing up for another Alefest season with ARCADIA BREWING CO with brewer Tim Suprise in the house! Monday September 14, 7 PM. The list will be posted here soon.

In addition, we will be rolling out VAULT SERIES brews. Essentially digging with pickaxe and blasting caps into The Gate's hold for a weekly, daily, hourly if necessary showcase of stuff we have been holding. The Gate will post the oddities as they are tapped via our TWITTERERTRONICTWEETOMATIC thing. You can stalk us if you TWIT.

Wednesday September 23rd is confirmed for ALLAGASH. We have a load of cellared beer for this one. If it has all held up, we will be well-soaked!

Join Pat Wednesday night and come by to savor the first ever appearance of Alesmith cask ale in NYC.

Alesmith Nautical Nut Brown Ale - Description below:

Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.
